| Nestled at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains, the district of Brentwood in Los Angeles' Westside is one of the region's wealthiest neighborhoods. West of the San Diego Freeway, it is bordered by Pacific Palisades and Santa Monica on the west and southwest; West Los Angeles and Sawtelle on the south and southeast; Westwood on the east and Bel-Air on the north.
The district can be roughly divided into two, with Sunset Boulevard as the demarcation line. The area north of the boulevard is characterized by canyons and ridges while the southern half has underground springs and small creeks.
With access to the best of everything, Brentwood has long been a popular neighborhood for professionals and more affluent Angelenos as well as Hollywood celebrities. Among the district's famous residents have been Clark Gable, Nat King Cole, Judy Garland, Steven Spielberg, Cindy Crawford, Jim Carrey and California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Originally part of the Rancho San Vicente y Santa Monica, the soybeans and avocadoes that used to grow on Brentwood soil have been replaced by trendy shopping districts, apartment complexes and multi-million-dollar mansions. Named after the borough in Essex, England, Brentwood has a distinctive British flavor that is apparent in its street names (e.g. Barrington, Bristol, Gretna Green, etc.) as well as such features as a village commons (called Brentwood Green) and a Maypole which is raised every year.
One of the area's not to be missed destinations is the world renowned Getty Museum, high up on the hills above Brentwood.
