As its name implies, the defining feature of the seaside community of Marina Del Rey is its marina. The largest manmade small boat harbor on the west coast, it has 5,246 boat slips in 23 anchorages and docks.
Marina Del Rey appeals to more than just boating enthusiasts, however. With its spectacular sunset views, savory gourmet cuisine and host of shopping and recreational opportunities, the community appeals to just about everybody.
Located on L.A.'s Westside, Marina Del Rey is right between the Pacific Ocean and the city, and midway between Venice and Playa del Rey. Only four miles away from LAX, it's also accessible via the Marina Freeway (three-mile-long California State Route 90) which segues into Interstate 405 and Culver City.
Built from the late '50s to the mid-'60s, Marina Del Rey has 807 acres, half of which is underwater. The area is served and managed by the County of Los Angeles, which also provides public education through the Los Angeles Unified School District and safety services through the L.A. Sheriff's Department.
A peaceful community of wide boardwalks and spacious recreational trails and walkways, Marina Del Rey is transformed into a bustling, energetic town after the sun goes down. With approximately 35 restaurants and clubs, it has the highest concentration of restaurants in one square mile outside of New York City. The community is also a favorite Sunday morning destination for relaxing Angelenos who are drawn by the waterside setting and the delectable champagne brunches that have become a Marina Del Rey specialty.
