There's no town quite like Venice. Named after the historic Italian city and built like it the district has canals, Renaissance architecture and, in a purely California touch, beaches.
Born from the vision of real estate maverick Abbot Kinney, Venice was founded on the 4th of July 1905. Intended to be a cross between an amusement park and a coastal renaissance resort, it has undergone several changes through the years. Now, the park is long gone and a number of canals have been converted into more conventional streets. One thing has always remained constant, however, and it is Venice's colorful, animated atmosphere.
People love to visit Venice, and they adore living here even more. Dubbed one of the "funkiest towns of America," it is home to everyone from artists to dental assistants to weightlifters. A distinctively eclectic community in a region already well-known for its diversity, Venice is a miscellany of sounds, sights, tastes and people.
Situated in the Westside of Los Angeles between Santa Monica and Marina Del Rey, Venice is only 15 minutes away from the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and half an hour from downtown L.A. A pedestrian-friendly city, it has numerous pedestrian-only streets as well as several bike trails.
You'll never run out of things to do in Venice. If you're looking for a bite to eat, stroll down Abbot Kinney Boulevard where you can also shop at a funky boutique and take in some art. Then, of course, there's the beach. Head down to the famed Muscle Beach if you're into sweat, or grab a seat at one of the sidewalk cafes and let Venice work its zany charm on you as its motley crew of residents, acrobats and street performers pass by.
