Along Santa Monica Boulevard, compacted in an area of 1.9 square miles, lies one of the most luxurious cities in the country. As the residents themselves say, "Welcome to West Hollywood. Population: Fabulous."
Though founded relatively recently (in 1984), the area has had a long history of style, liberalism and nonconformity. In the late 19th century, it was the hub of the Los Angeles and Pacific Railway and was known for being liquor-friendly and a place of sanctuary for those mistrustful of the government. The district held out against incorporation for the longest time, preferring to remain under the jurisdiction of L.A. County and avoiding the restrictions of the city in the process.
In the 1920s, casinos and nightclubs blossomed along Sunset Strip (gambling was illegal in the city of L.A.) and celebrities thronged the area's less-restrictive streets. In the '50s the design and decorating industries started moving in (the 750,000 square-foot Pacific Design Center was completed in 1975). In the '60s it was the center of hippie culture and home to a booming music publishing industry; and in 1984, residents finally decided to incorporate as the City of West Hollywood after L.A. planned to get rid of their rent control.
Then and now, West Hollywood (popularly referred to as WeHo) has been a haven for the artistic, the creative and the different. The city is supportive of any kind of lifestyle, alternative or otherwise.
Folks love living in West Hollywood not only because it's an open city, but also because it's the location of some of the most sough-after living spaces in the west coast as well as internationally renowned shopping and dining districts. West Hollywood is home to the storied Sunset Strip and the trendy Avenues of Art & Design.
